Over the past few years with all modern possibilities of the access to the Internet, the young people experience a massive impact around the world. You can find almost any age group on the Internet, whose representatives are active users of the social networks every day. Teenagers and even children almost every hour surf the Internet with or without their parents’ approvals. According to the actual social research, most of the time when children are on the Internet, they devote to online games, social networks, and large bright pictures.
Having an access to the Internet, the younger generation, including children, grows up faster. But instead of creating a real relationship, they are more concerned about their relationships in the social networks. Children largely depend on the social networking media for forming and exposing their personalities, rather than that they depend on their surroundings, parents, teachers, and peers. Social networks have much more effect on children than the real life. Freaky graphic illustrations, brief spells of fads, and technology trends usually attract children and most of the time they form their opinions according to these whims and trends. Under the influence of those whims and tendencies, the youngsters seek to imitate the popular characters, creating their images for their comfortable role among their peers. Most children use social websites much earlier than these sites age limits. In the end result, this affects the children positively and negatively as well.
The modern development of informational technologies allows children to be well informed, without applying too much effort. Comparing the previous generations, young people had to do a lot of physical effort to collect real knowledge a couple dozen years ago. Modern adolescents have an easy access to the Internet and its unlimited resources. Children around the world are becoming smarter in every aspect of life, using social media and the Internet. With the new generation of cell phones, connected to the Internet, our youngsters are becoming more and more connected. Since the world is shrinking with the use of the Internet and social media, our children know everything about their surrounding world. Groups of children around the world are now quite knowledgeable about issues such as sex, pregnancy, abortion, sexual diseases, about the related myths and superstitions. They are aware of the problems and meanings that are relevant to their interests. There are some very good examples when children are connected in the networks to unite around an idea or a cause. And their participation in the social media contribute to their knowledge and makes it a real phenomenon so that they can evaluate the situation and make an appropriate decision.
Although, besides the positive effect of the free and easy access to the information, the abuse of technology by our children is one of the major negative effects. There are cases when some internal aggressive groups were formed in the social networks. A spread of sexual content, cyber intimidation, and so on affect the younger brains in a negative way. We can consider the excessive use of the short words and specific slang among our children. The use of abbreviations in a certain way leads to a situation similar if we do not use any grammar at all.
Too much time, spent on the Internet, can lead to psychological confusions and the destruction of basic moral values in children’s minds. And this is really worrying effect for all families. Real relationships are threatened, as most children tend to have more online relationships than real ones. If our children were not properly guided by this, then their identities would not be limited by their social online network images. The children’s life may be damaged, because they participate in diverse activities much less, preferring to be on the Internet with their devices. It is said that our new modern generation has a new style of life, a style where individualism comes first. And with inappropriate use of social networks, the Internet, and other technological achievements, our children will necessarily experience the danger of individualism very soon. Children become vulnerable to the online fraud and aggressive marketing methods.
What are the ways out?
Both control and censorship in the social media may decrease the risks that become even greater every day. Also, we need the active participation of parents and teachers in providing young people with the safe social networks and the Internet. On the part of children, it is necessary to achieve understanding before they act, which again is possible only under parental supervision. Finally, our government and social regulators must have adaptive laws and policies to protect our children against the negative points. In every country, there are rules and regulations, but they need to be improved in accordance with the time requirements.
