Green revolution has given impetus to a large number of researches what can be done to decrease negative influence of human activity on the environment. One of the most efficient solutions on reduction of fuel consumption is a hybrid vehicle. Such vehicles have two motors: gas and electric one. Such combination helps to use the strong sides of both motors and reduce deficiencies. Thus drivers can use electric motor during rush hours where it is more efficient and gas motor when driving at the highway (Anderson 134-145).

Hybrids are more sustainable, cost-effective and environmental-friendly in comparison with the gas powered vehicles.

The first hybrid in history was assembled by Porsche: it combined an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. But this vehicle soon was almost forgotten due to the invention of the assembly line that was used in Henry Ford’s plant that produced gas-powered vehicles.

The energy crisis in 1973 was a time when hybrids re-entered the game as governments searched for the ways of lessening dependence on oil and gas. That initiative resulted in a program “Hybrid Electric Vehicle” (HEV) that involved the Department of Energy, GM, Chrysler and Ford. The first attempt to market electric cars in the US failed, and the second attempt to facilitate HEV vehicles was more successful – in 2000 Toyota Prius hit the market.

Hybrids are considered to be more gasoline-effective than any other vehicle and owners saving more costs by using hybrid vehicles compared with vehicles running on gas. (Yost 77-91). Further development of hybrid technologies has led to “internal combustion” – now hybrid vehicles use only electric power on slow speed. As a result, such cars use less gas, diminish the quantity of gas emissions and thus lessen the negative impact on the environment. Governments try to interest citizens into changing their gas vehicles to hybrid cars with help of tax incentives – yet people themselves want to purchase such cars because they are more fuel-efficient and cost-effective than any other vehicle.

Americans are well-known for admiration of large cars that consume crazy amounts of petrol. Hardly surprising that the United States today are considered to be the largest producer of CO2 in the world. Gas emissions are responsible for a greenhouse effect and breaking the ozone layer so usage of hybrid cars helps to reduce the level of pollution. So no wonder that this country encourages using technology of HEV, reducing gas emissions from CO2 by almost half to one-third. (Yost 77-91).

Hybrid cars are especially efficient in the cities during rush hours and traffic jams – cars then are moving slower, so only electric motors work, saving gas. In addition, hybrid vehicles are said to have better brakes system, so they are much safer than common cars.

Modern hybrid vehicles are created using technical advancements in spheres of weight reduction and aerodynamics. As a result, the car consumes less gas and can drive farther on the same amount of gas compared with cars with gas engines.

It is obvious that a hybrid that uses strong sides of two motors is more cost-effective and environmental-friendly.
